Had a real bad time with a stuck umbilical on a river job in Pittsburgh

We were doing a bridge inspection last fall and my umbilical got jammed under a concrete slab on the riverbed. I had about 15 minutes of air left and my tender couldn't pull it free. I had to cut my way out of my harness and do a free ascent, which was not fun in that current. My supervisor was pretty mad, but we got the gear back later with a grapple hook. Anyone else ever had to ditch their gear in a tight spot?

Wait, isn't a free ascent from that depth super risky?

Oh man, @shanem37, that reminds me of a crazy story from my scuba class.

Yeah that "free ascent" thing gives me chills... my friend had to do one when his air ran out at like 60 feet. He said his training just kicked in and he kept blowing out bubbles the whole way up, but he was so scared. He had to sit out of dives for a week after, just shook him up bad. Makes me think of that story jordan_webb hinted at, there's probably some wild ones out there.
