Appreciation post: a 1982 Comic Buyer's Guide price list I found in my dad's garage in Toledo puts my whole collection in check
A near mint copy of New Teen Titans #1 sat at $12 in that issue and I paid $60 for the same book in 2019, so the hype tax is real. Which bronze age book do you think is the most overpriced right now?
What makes you so sure the $12 in that 1982 guide was even a real market price back then? I remember those old Buyer's Guide lists were often just dealer wish prices, not what books actually sold for at shows. My local shop in the early 80s had New Teen Titans #1 in the dollar bin for years because nobody cared about a reboot of a team that had been cancelled. The real question is whether today's prices are hype or just what happens when a whole generation hits their peak earning years and chases the books they couldn't afford as kids. Also you have to factor in that CGC changed everything, a raw copy and a 9.8 slab are basically two different products now. So yeah the hype tax is real but I bet that old price list was inflated too, just in a different way.
