Three months with a French press and I finally see the difference

I switched from my drip machine to a $20 French press back in January and my morning coffee went from bitter dishwater to actually tasting like chocolate and nuts. Has anyone else noticed how much grind size matters with these things?

Does anyone actually enjoy chewing their coffee though? Because I've been using a French press for three years and mine still tastes like gritty dirt no matter what I do, @garcia.tyler you said coffee roulette but I'd rather have a consistent bad cup than this wild swing between mud water and sludge. I tried the "coarse grind" thing and got a cup that looked like tea and tasted like sadness, then went medium-fine and basically drank a smoothie of grounds. Maybe the magic is just in the price tag, like people convince themselves a $20 gadget transforms bad beans into gourmet stuff?

Bitter dishwater" is exactly how I'd describe my pre-French press life too lol. I mean, yeah, grind size is basically the whole game with these things, too coarse and you get weak brown water, too fine and you're chewing your coffee. Probably why my first few cups tasted like I was brewing with gravel.

Right? It's like a science experiment every morning. Coffee roulette: will it be drinkable or will I be chewing my breakfast?
