Serious question, did anyone else's coffee get worse when they switched from a $12 blade grinder to a burr one?
For 6 years I used the same cheap blade grinder from Target and my pour over tasted fine to me, until my brother gave me his old burr grinder last March. The first cup I made with it tasted flat and watery, and I almost gave up on it, but after about 10 days of messing with the grind setting the coffee actually started tasting like the beans I was paying $18 a bag for. Did anyone else go through a rough stretch when they switched grinders, or was it just me?
My first burr cup in March tasted like hot water with a hint of sad. Took me about two weeks of tiny adjustments before it clicked, and honestly the grind was way too coarse at first because I copied some chart online instead of just going finer until it tasted right. The flat taste you had is normal since a blade grinder makes a mix of dust and chunks, and that dust covers up a lot of stuff you didn't know was missing. Stick with it and dial in by taste, not by whatever number the chart says.
The "hot water with a hint of sad" thing made me laugh cause same, my first burr cup was just blah and I kept second guessing the whole switch. Good to know the flat stage is just part of it and not me wasting 18 bucks a bag, thanks for the reality check.
