My sister told me my fancy pour over setup is just for show

She visited yesterday and watched me make a cup with my gooseneck kettle and scale. She said, 'You know, that's a lot of work for a drink you finish in ten minutes.' I always thought the ritual was part of the fun, but her comment stuck with me. Maybe I focus too much on the gear and not enough on just enjoying the coffee. Do you ever feel like the process gets in the way of the point?

Oh man, my buddy had the same thing happen with his vinyl records! He was showing off his new turntable, cleaning a record with a special brush, and his cousin just said, "My phone plays the same song in two seconds." For a week, he felt silly. But then he told me he realized he loves the whole act, the flipping the record, the big artwork. It's not just about hearing the music. Your pour over is like that. If you like the ritual, that's the whole point.

Exactly. The ritual is the whole point. It turns a simple task into something you actually enjoy.

Yeah that actually makes a lot of sense now.
