Hit 1000 customer conversations in my shop and it hit me different

I run a small espresso cart at the local farmer's market and I just passed the 1000th chat with a customer. Didnt even keep count on purpose I just noticed my notebook was full of order notes. What got me is that I remembered maybe 60 of those faces and stories but they all got a solid cup. Anyone else find that the small wins like hitting a round number make you see your work differently?

Buddy of mine runs a hot dog cart and he told me he hit a streak where he remembered every single customer's dog order for like two weeks straight. Then one day a lady asked for ketchup and he froze up, totally blanked on her face. Kinda made him rethink how much of the job is just showing up and doing the thing right.

Read something a while back about how memory works in service jobs. Apparently the brain treats repeated tasks like a script, so you can run on autopilot for a while. But once something breaks that pattern, like a request for ketchup when you don't usually stock it, the whole system resets. Your buddy probably had a mental loop going, and that lady threw a wrench in it. Kind of like how you can drive the same route to work for months without thinking, but one detour makes you forget where you are. It's not that he's bad at the job, just that the brain likes routines more than we realize.

That's just the nature of the game though. Showing up and doing the thing right is the whole job, the rest is just extra gravy.
