A barista at Blue Bottle gave me brew advice that was totally backwards

This guy named Marcus who works the morning shift told me to grind finer for my Chemex back in July. I listened and my coffee came out muddy and bitter for 3 weeks straight. Finally asked a different barista and she said Marcus always gives bad advice because he likes over-extracted coffee. Now I just nod at him and do the opposite. Has anyone else run into a coffee shop employee giving flat out wrong tips?

Honestly that's hilarious and also super frustrating. I've definitely met a few coffee people who push their weird personal preferences on everyone like they're gospel.

yeah but like... did you ever sus out if he genuinely thinks that's good coffee or if he's just trolling people for fun? i feel like there's a big difference between being clueless and being a menace
