Spent 6 hours chasing a 0.001" offset on a Haas VF-2
Turned out the coolant nozzle was just barely blowing chips back onto the sensor. Has anyone else had a tiny setup issue turn into a whole day of troubleshooting?

Wait, the coolant nozzle was blowing chips back onto the sensor? That sounds like it was mounted wrong or aimed weird. Usually on a VF-2 those nozzles are supposed to be pointed down at the tool, not back at the table or sensor area. Maybe someone adjusted it and just never turned it back. I've had that happen before where a setup guy flipped the nozzle to spray off a part and forgot to put it back. But yeah, those little things can eat up a whole day. The worst one I had was a wire hanging down just barely touching a limit switch every time the door closed. Took me forever to find it.

I saw this exact thing happen to a buddy of mine over at a job shop in Cleveland. He was working on an Okuma and the machine kept faulting out on the tool changer position sensor every couple cycles. Took him like three hours of pulling his hair out before he realized the coolant hose had a tiny split right near the fitting and it was spraying a fine mist straight onto the sensor lens every time the pump kicked on. He said it happened so gradually that the mist just built up a film over like an hour before the sensor started acting up. By the time he found it, the lens looked like it had been dipped in milk.
