Spent 3 hours chasing a phantom backlash issue on a Haas VF-2 last week
I've been running this machine for about 5 years and never had this particular headache. The part was coming out .005 off on the X axis and I was convinced the ballscrew was worn out. I checked the preload, ran indicator sweeps, re-ran my tool offsets three separate times. Turns out a chip had wedged itself under the way cover and was messing with the home switch. Total time wasted was about 3 hours before I noticed a tiny scratch in the cover. Has anyone else had a problem that seemed like a mechanical issue but was actually just debris?

Five thou is barely a hiccup on most jobs though, right?

Last job I bid, the material alone ran four times that.
