The community garden composter that turned into a raccoon buffet

Last month our plot's shared composter broke its latch and within 3 nights the whole thing was scattered across the beds. I spent a Saturday morning sorting half-rotted squash vines from the carrot rows, which was exactly as gross as it sounds. We ended up rebuilding it with a $15 hasp and a bungee cord, and now we're debating whether to go with a tumbling bin or just accept the raccoons as part of the ecosystem. Has anyone else had their compost pile wrecked by critters and found a fix that actually holds up?

That "accept the raccoons as part of the ecosystem" line hit me, cause I used to be all for just letting nature do its thing, but after my pile got dug up three times in a week I caved and got a cheap tumbling bin. Honestly, best call I made, the critters lost interest fast and the compost actually finishes quicker.
