The 3-day heat wave that made me ditch my lawn for good
Last July we had five straight days over 100 degrees in Sacramento, and my sprinklers ran every morning just to keep the grass from turning brown. I calculated the water bill that week and it was $86, plus the city sent a notice about drought restrictions. That pushed me to rip out the front yard and put in drought tolerant plants and gravel instead. The new setup uses maybe 10 minutes of drip irrigation twice a week, and the water bill dropped to $32. I'm honestly surprised how much easier it is to maintain, no mowing or edging either. Has anyone else made the switch and found a plant that actually survives the summer without looking dead?

Wait, $86 for water in one week? That's wild. I mean, I knew Sacramento got hot but that's basically a car payment just to keep grass alive. Did you actually sit there and watch that drip system work the first time, or did you just trust it? I gotta say, the no mowing part sounds like a dream though, I hate busting out the mower every Saturday. What did you end up planting that didn't look like a crispy mess by August?
