Pro tip: Don't buy a $200 'smart' compost bin that needs an app

I got this fancy bin that promised to track my compost's carbon footprint. It stopped connecting to my phone after a week, and now it's just a heavy, expensive plastic tub. I tried resetting it for three hours before giving up. Has anyone found a good, simple compost system that doesn't involve Wi-Fi?

The carbon footprint thing is a bit of a red flag. Your food scraps are already avoiding the landfill, which is the real win. A simple bucket under the sink works fine, or a basic outdoor bin if you have space. The tech is solving a problem that doesn't really exist for home composting.

@mitchell.lee What about people in apartments with no outdoor space? A bucket under the sink just sits there smelling until you can take it somewhere.

Yeah my buddy in a studio tried the bucket thing and it was a disaster. He had to keep it in a tiny closet and the smell got into his clothes, it was nasty. He ended up just freezing his scraps in an old bread bag until trash day, which worked way better for no outdoor space. The whole thing really depends on your living situation, a bucket isn't a one size fits all fix.
