Opted for a heat pump instead of a new gas furnace last spring
I live in Portland and had to choose between a $7,500 heat pump install or a $4,200 gas furnace when my old system died. Went with the heat pump and my electric bill only went up $20 a month since I turned off the gas completely. Anyone else make a similar switch and see big savings or problems with cold weather performance?

I put in a Mitsubishi heat pump last November here in Seattle and my gas bill went from $90 to zero... electric only went up about $25. The cold mornings in the 20s are fine, the system still puts out warm air just takes a little longer to heat up. No regrets at all, especially with those rebates knocking down the upfront cost.

Yeah but that $100 bill during the cold snap sounds rough." My buddy's heat pump froze up solid last winter and he had to chip ice off it with a hammer.

The cold mornings in the 20s are fine" - I had a buddy in Bend who got a heat pump a couple years back and he said the same thing, but then we had that crazy cold snap last winter where it hit 10 degrees and his system basically turned into a space heater, running nonstop with backup coils. His electric bill that month was almost $100 more than usual but he said it was still cheaper than paying the gas hookup fee all year. He's happy with it overall but he keeps a couple space heaters in the garage just in case.
