Hot take: my neighbor in Phoenix told me my rain barrel was 'a bucket for mosquitoes' so I changed the whole setup
She said standing water breeds bugs and I should keep the lid tight and use the overflow hose, so now my 55 gallon barrel has a screen on top and the squash bed gets the runoff, but I'm wondering if anyone has a better lid or filter idea?
Your neighbor sounds like the type who worries about everything. A little standing water in a rain barrel is not gonna wipe out the block. My parents had an open barrel for 20 years back in Ohio and yeah maybe a few skeeters hung around it but the world kept spinning. Unless you've got a swamp back there or the water sits for months without moving, the bug thing is way overblown in my book. A screen is fine if it makes you feel better but I would not stress about a fancy lid or filter setup.
