Never knew soot could be a fire hazard itself
Read some NFPA 211 tables last night. Turns out a 1/8 inch of creosote can cause a chimney fire at 1100 degrees. I always thought it was just blockage. Told my apprentice and he looked at me like I was crazy. Anyone else run into homeowners who think a dirty flue is no big deal until you show them that stat?

Ha, the "1/8 inch" stat gets people every time. My buddy who does chimney sweeps up in Vermont told me about a homeowner who argued with him for twenty minutes that his flue was fine "because the smoke still goes up." Turns out the guy had been burning wet pine all winter and the creosote was basically glazed on, like a thick tar shell. He only believed it when my buddy scraped off a chunk and showed him it was hard as a rock. Poor guy had to get a full reline done.
