Bought a $300 molecular gastronomy kit, used it twice, now it collects dust

I got talked into one of those fancy spherification and foam kits last winter. Thought I was gonna be the coolest line cook in Portland. Tried the caviar pearls once, they tasted like salty jelly beans. Tried the nitro ice cream, got a face full of vapor and a headache. That thing is just a really expensive paperweight now. Anyone else fall for the gimmicky gear that sounds amazing but never leaves the shelf?

The salty jelly beans comment hit home. My buddy Dan bought the exact same kit for his wife's birthday, spent a whole weekend trying to make those floating fruit spheres for her cocktail party. One of them exploded in his hand and stained his white shirt green, and the rest just sank to the bottom of the glasses like sad little boogers. The kit's been sitting in his garage next to a bread maker he got in 2019.
