A lunch lady at my kid's school said my rice and beans was "too plain" so I changed one thing and now it feeds us for $4.10
I pack rice and beans for my family about four nights a week because it is cheap and fills everyone up, but after a potluck at my kid's school in Akron last month one of the lunch ladies pulled me aside and said it tasted flat and looked boring on the plate. I was a little annoyed at first, but she was right, I had been dumping canned beans and white rice in a pot with salt and calling it dinner. So I started doing two cheap things different. First, I brown a diced onion and a spoon of cumin in oil before anything goes in, and second I squeeze in half a lime right at the end. That lime costs me about 30 cents at the corner market and the cumin jar lasts me almost two months. The whole pot still comes out to around $4.10 when I price it out, beans, rice, onion, spices, and all. My kids actually ask for it now instead of groaning, and my wife said it tastes like a real meal instead of a side dish. Has anyone else gotten a random food tip from someone that actually stuck? I am wondering what cheap add-in does the most work in your kitchen.
