Sat in the corner booth at Rosie's Diner in Boise for 20 minutes before I noticed the jukebox was gone
Went to Rosie's on 5th in Boise Saturday morning for the first time in about 4 months and the old Wurlitzer that sat by the window since I was a kid is just gone. Waitress said they pulled it out in March because nobody fed it quarters anymore and it took up space for a new table. Half the regulars at the counter think it was the right call, said the thing was beat up and skipped on every other song anyway. The other half, including me, feel like the place lost a chunk of its personality for an extra two-top that sits empty most mornings. Curious where people land on this, should a diner keep the old stuff even if it does not earn its keep?
That Wurlitzer sat by that window for like 30 years and they swapped it for a two-top that nobody even uses before noon. So now you get to stare at an empty table while you eat your eggs, real upgrade. Here's the thing though, a jukebox that skips on every other song is still doing more for the room than an empty chair ever will. Tbh if a diner only keeps stuff that earns its keep, half the regulars at the counter would be gone too, myself included. Nobody's feeding quarters into me either but they still let me sit there.
