I switched from a regular speed square to a rafter square for a roof job last week

I mean, I always thought my old square was fine, but cutting those compound angles for a shed dormer was a pain. The rafter square had the hip and valley scales right on it, so I didn't have to calculate anything. It saved me maybe an hour of figuring and test cuts on that one project. Has anyone else found a specific tool that just clicks for a certain job?

Disagree with the idea you always need a special tool. My old speed square and a bit of math handled every hip roof I've ever done, so maybe @wendy391's "right tool" is just the one you already know how to use. Sometimes the new gear just solves a problem you made for yourself.
