Was working late nights for 2 years until my boss said 'you're the only one still here'

I used to brag about being the last one out of the office. Thought it showed dedication. Then my manager pulled me aside and said everyone else was getting their work done in 6 hours while I was taking 10. Realized I was just being inefficient and scared to leave. Now I finish by 5 and my reviews are better. Has anyone else had a wake-up call like that where you thought you were working hard but really just working dumb?

Nah, I gotta push back on this a little. Staying late can be a red flag for bad management, not just bad work habits. Sometimes the boss expects you to grind for years and then acts surprised you’re not leaving. Feels like they’re blaming you for their own bad planning.

Yeah, totally agree with you @lucasw82. That part about "bad management" hits hard, too many places act surprised people burn out after years of that grind. You shouldn't have to feel guilty for having a life outside work.
