Picked the lower-paying offer and it worked out way better
Had to choose between two job offers last year. One was at a big bank in Charlotte paying $78k, the other was a small marketing agency for $62k. I took the agency gig because the boss let me pick my own projects and skip the commute. Turns out the flexibility let me build a portfolio that got me a $95k job six months later. Anyone else gambled on a smaller paycheck for better experience?

Gambled" is a strong word for taking a pay cut.

@Susan130 I gotta push back on that a little. "Gambled" is the PERFECT word for walking away from guaranteed money. You took a 16k pay cut with no promise the plan would work, that's a gamble in my book.
Bank jobs are stable as a rock, right? You get your 78k, you clock out at 5, you slowly climb the ladder for 40 years. But you rolled the dice on flexibility and project choices, and it paid off bigtime.
Most people I know who took the safe money at a big company ended up stuck with boring work and a boss who micro manages every keystroke. The real gamble is often the safe choice because you trade experience for a small difference in pay.
So yeah, I think we should all be honest about the RISK you actually took. Pay cuts are scary, even the smart ones.
