My old manager told me to never take a counteroffer, and I'm glad I didn't
He said it after I got a job offer from a tech startup in Austin, and my current company tried to match it. He told me, 'They'll just replace you when they can.' I took the new job, and six months later, my old role was cut. Has anyone else been given a piece of career advice that seemed harsh but was totally right?

Same thing happened to my friend last year.

Yeah, that's solid advice... my old boss said the same thing when I was looking. They'll just buy time to find your cheaper replacement. @the_mila is right, it happens all the time. I saw a guy take a counteroffer and they let him go after one quarter.

Totally agree with you and @the_mila on this. My uncle got burned the same way. His company matched an outside offer, then fired him three months later during a "restructure." They just wanted to keep him long enough to finish a big project.
