My manager said to send the resume as a PDF, my old job wanted Word, and I lost a job over it
So about 5 months ago I was helping my buddy apply for jobs and he kept sending his resume as a Word doc. I told him to send a PDF instead, because the formatting stays put no matter what computer opens it. He argued with me for like 20 minutes about it and sent the Word version anyway to a place in Denver. The hiring guy later told him the bullet points got all scrambled and lined up weird on his screen, so he tossed it. Same resume as a PDF got him a call two weeks later. If you are emailing resumes right now, which one are you using, and has a weird format ever cost you a shot?
You really think a PDF always saves you? A lot of big companies run resumes through software that reads Word files way better, and a PDF can come out as a blank mess if the scanner chokes on it. So the file type that wins depends on the place, and telling your buddy to always go PDF is just as risky as always going Word.
