I viewed grocery work as temporary, then a manager's story about his career growth shifted my view.

His move from cashier to franchise owner showed me this work can lead to a real career.

Hold up, is it really that deep though? For every one manager who buys a franchise, how many cashiers are still just scanning items ten years later? Knowing why a line gets long is useful, sure, but is that the same as running a whole business? It just feels like a nice story that doesn't match most people's reality.

Read about a woman who began as a part-time cashier at a local market. She learned all the departments, became a supervisor, and eventually bought into the business. The article said her people skills and knowing the daily operations were key. It's cool how entry-level jobs can turn into something long-term.

Used to see those jobs as just temporary gigs for high school kids (you know, like a stepping stone to something "real"). But hearing stories like that makes me realize how much deep knowledge you build from the ground up. Like, a manager who started as a cashier actually knows why the checkout gets backed up on Saturdays, or which suppliers cause problems. That stuff really matters, way more than just some degree on paper. Changes how I look at every store I walk into now.
