Got let go 3 weeks ago because I never asked for the raise I was promised
My boss at a logistics company in Columbus kept saying we would talk about my pay in January, and when I finally brought it up after 8 months he acted like I was out of line, so learn from me and put the ask in writing the same week it comes up, has anyone else gotten burned by a vague verbal promise like this?
Bosses pull this stuff because they can, and putting it in writing does not magically protect you either. Plenty of folks get a written offer letter yanked before the ink dries, or a "that email was just a rough idea" walk back once budgets get tight in Q1.
Eight months of waiting was the real issue here, not the format of the ask. You gave him a reason to think you were fine with the setup, and by the time you pushed, he had already spent that money on other stuff in his head.
Being right about the promise does not pay your rent. Next time, treat any pay talk as dead until the number shows up in your check.
