A retired lineman at a job fair in Tulsa asked me one thing about my resume that I still think about
I was at a trade job fair in Tulsa last month, mostly killing time while my apprentice talked to a few shops. This old lineman looked at my resume for about 10 seconds and asked why I listed every cert I ever got but never once wrote down a single job I finished. It sounds dumb, but I reworked my resume that weekend to lead with completed projects instead of a wall of acronyms, and got two callbacks in a week. Has anyone else had a stranger at an event give them advice that actually stuck?
Kept reading this one a few times because it's a good story but the advice part isn't quite what you think it is. That old lineman wasn't telling you to drop your certs, he was telling you the order was wrong. Nobody in the trades cares how many acronyms you stacked up if they can't tell what you actually built or fixed. The certs still matter, they're just the proof, not the pitch. Lead with the work and let the paper back it up, which sounds like exactly what you figured out.
