How a rainy weekend at Moosehead Lake changed my mind about cheap sleeping pads
For years I swore by my $20 foam pad, thinking it was good enough for car camping. Then last August we got three straight days of rain in Maine and the cold just seeped right up through the ground. I borrowed a friend's Therm-a-Rest Z Lite and actually slept warm that third night. Has anyone else found that a decent sleeping pad makes a bigger difference than upgrading a tent?

Yeah dude, a good pad changes everything in the cold wet.

The "changes everything" part really hit me. My brother went on a camping trip last spring without a proper pad, just a thin yoga mat. He ended up sleeping curled around a tree root all night. Came back saying he felt like a human pretzel in the morning. Took him three days to straighten his back out. Now he brings like three pads everywhere. Even uses one for afternoon naps in the yard.
