Had a close call with a cheap stove in the Wind River Range

Honestly, I was about 4 days into a trip in Wyoming last August when my budget canister stove just quit. It was getting dark and cold, around 40 degrees, and I couldn't get my dinner going. A guy in our group had a reliable MSR WhisperLite and saved the night. Now I won't go into the backcountry without a stove I've tested at home first. Anyone else have a piece of gear that failed them when it really mattered?

It's wild how often the cheap version fails right when you need it most. Happens with way more than just camping gear.

Ugh, tell me about it! I bought a cheap phone charger from a gas station and it fried my battery in the middle of a road trip. Felt like such a dumb move. It's like they're built to break at the worst possible time. I've learned that lesson the hard way too many times now.

Yeah, @the_emma, it's like a rule that cheap stuff always breaks at the worst time.
