I had an old guy in a fedora teach me about shutter springs at a yard sale last month

He said he used to work for a repair shop in the 70s and showed me how to reset a sticky leaf shutter with just a toothpick and some lighter fluid. Has anyone else had random run-ins with retired repair folks who drop knowledge like that?

Bet that fedora came with a secret level unlock code for vintage camera wisdom. Lighter fluid and a toothpick sounds like the start of a terrible DIY YouTube thumbnail.

Right, so a bit of lighter fluid on a toothpick is actually solid advice if you're careful. You just want to dampen it, not soak it, and gently roll it over the brass contacts inside the camera. I've cleaned a dozen old Pentax spots that way, saved me from sending them out for a CLA every time a battery leaks. Just don't breathe in the fumes and do it in a well-ventilated spot, maybe away from your fedora.
