Dropped $2,500 on a prenup I didn't need and I'm still mad about it
Last year me and my fiance were getting married in San Diego and her mom kept pushing us to get a prenup "just in case." I didn't own much, no house, no business, just a used car and about $9k in savings, but the mom got in my head so we hired a lawyer in Mission Valley. $2,500 later we had this 14 page document that basically said we each keep our own stuff, which is already how California law works for the most part since we weren't bringing anything big into the marriage. What really got me was when my buddy, who is a paralegal in Fresno, looked it over and said we could have printed a DIY version off the state website or just skipped it, because separate property stays separate unless you mix it. I sat on that for a month feeling like a total sucker before I changed my mind about the whole thing, and honestly what flipped me was reading that most couples who get these barely have any assets to protect anyway. So yeah, don't let a relative scare you into paperwork you don't need. Has anyone here actually used a prenup in a way that saved them real money later? I want to know if I'm wrong to be this annoyed.
