Rookie on my crew asked why I always ring the doorbell twice, and his question made me change how I train
Had a helper with me on a Tuesday job in Rochester and he asked why I hit the bell twice before every install. I told him it gives the customer a few extra seconds to get to the door, and he pointed out nobody ever explained that to him on his first day. That hit me because I picked it up from an old lead guy years ago and just assumed everyone knew. Now I walk new hires through the little stuff like that on day one instead of letting them figure it out alone. What small habits did you learn from a mentor that you wish someone had spelled out sooner?
Honestly I'd push back on the whole idea of spelling everything out on day one. Half of what you know came from watching the old lead guy and picking up on it yourself, and that's how people actually learn this trade. If you hand a rookie a checklist of every tiny habit on his first morning, he nods along and forgets all of it by lunch because none of it means anything yet. The doorbell thing only stuck with you because you saw it done a hundred times and then asked why. Let the new guy be curious enough to ask, that's a better sign of who's gonna make it than someone who waits to be told. Some stuff you gotta earn by paying attention, not by getting a handout.
