My old boss in Denver told me to never use zip ties on a drop line

He said the plastic would degrade and snap in a few years, so I always used waxed string instead. Well, I went back to a house I wired five years ago for another job, and every single one of my string ties had frayed and come loose. The new guy with me just shook his head and showed me his UV-rated outdoor zip ties. What's your go-to for securing a drop to a house?

Your old boss had a point about cheap zip ties, but the UV-rated ones are a different product. I've seen them hold up for over a decade on southern exposures without failing. A good stainless steel band clamp is my first choice for a permanent fix, though.

Ever wonder if the real test is just forgetting about them for twenty years? I've seen those UV ties get brittle and snap after a long while, so I'm with @milessmith on the stainless clamp for anything you never want to touch again. It's the only thing that feels truly permanent.

UV ties still get brittle like jamesm38 said, just takes longer.
