An old timer in Cincinnati showed me a trick with a butter knife

Honestly, this was about 8 years ago on a job in an old brick apartment building. I was struggling to fish a line down a wall that had like three layers of plaster. This retired installer, just watching from his doorway, said 'Kid, hand me your butter knife.' He bent the tip just right and used it to hook the cable through a tiny hole in the lath. Ngl, I still use a bent butter knife in my bag for tight spots. Anyone else have a weird simple tool they keep around?

Yeah, a bent butter knife is key, kinda like benclark's belt buckle trick.

My buddy who does low voltage work swears by a specific plastic coat hanger he stole from a hotel. He straightens it out but leaves the hook, says it's perfect for pulling wires through insulation without snagging. He won't use anything else for that job now. It's funny what becomes a go-to tool after one weird success.

My old belt buckle works as a makeshift fish tape guide.
