The finish guy at the shop in Tulsa made me redo 6 doors and I get it now
I was spraying lacquer the same way I have for 11 years until Ray, the guy who does our touch ups, watched me lay down a coat and asked why I was holding the gun 10 inches from the panel. He said 6 to 8 inches max and half overlap, then made me sand back 6 doors I thought were done. My orange peel basically disappeared on the next batch once I slowed down and kept the gun closer. What distance do you all spray at, and does it change for water based vs solvent?
My buddy ran into the same thing last summer, his gun was way too far back and he was laying it on thick to make up for it. His water based stuff was the worst, he had to be even closer, like 5 or 6 inches, because it flashes so fast and drys before it can level out. Once he got his air pressure dialed in and stopped trying to cover it in one pass, his finish came out way smoother.
