Switched from pre-finished plywood to painting my own faces 2 years ago and haven't looked back
Used to order all my cabinet panels pre-finished with that melamine coating. It was fast and looked fine for builder grade work. But after a job for a customer in Oak Park who wanted a specific off-white shade, I had to paint everything myself. Took me an extra 3 days on that kitchen but the color match was perfect and the finish was way smoother. Now I do it for most of my custom jobs. The extra time is worth it when clients bring in a fabric swatch or paint chip. Any of you guys do your own paint work or do you stick with pre-finished?

i dunno man i feel like you're overcomplicating it. prefinished stuff is fine for most people. unless you're doing some super high end stuff who really cares that much about the sheen?

Switched to painting my own panels about 4 years back and never regretted it once. That extra day or two makes a huge difference when you can nail a custom color on the first try. Pre-finished stuff just looks too flat and glossy for my tastes now.
