Facing a big choice: Shop boss or keep working with my hands?

Some cabinetmakers argue that moving up to management gives more pay and say, but others say it takes you away from the bench work we love. I like making things and fear I would miss it. What do you all think?

Try splitting time between both.

Man, I was in your exact spot a few years back. I took the shop boss job and honestly, I spent most days missing the smell of sawdust. The extra money was nice, but I felt like a glorified babysitter pushing paper. I ended up stepping back down to the bench after about eighteen months. For me, the trade-off just wasn't worth losing the work I actually enjoyed doing.
