My aunt's advice to use a specific local lawyer backfired in Sacramento
My aunt swore by a guy named Ron who handled her SSDI case back in 2016. She said he never even made her come to the office and did everything over the phone. So when my back condition got denied last January, I called Ron without shopping around. Big mistake. He missed the deadline to file my appeal by like 2 weeks because his assistant quit and he never checked his voicemail. I had to start the whole process over with a different firm, and now I'm stuck waiting another 6 months for a hearing in Sacramento. Has anyone else trusted a family referral and regretted it, or am I just the unlucky one here?
This is just the referral tax we all pay at some point. Same thing happens with contractors, mechanics, dentists. Your aunt had a good experience in 2016 so she hands you the name like it's a golden ticket, but she has no clue if the guy still has the same staff or if he's even still sharp. Ten years is a long time for a solo practice to go downhill. The lesson is to check recent reviews and call the state bar before you trust any name, even from family.
