Showerthought: my 'simple' monthly cover page took me an entire evening

I decided to do a geometric mountain theme for April and spent 4 hours just trying to get the ruler lines straight and the watercolor shading even. It looked so easy on Pinterest but my ruler kept slipping and the colors bled. What's the fastest way you've found to do clean, straight lines without a light table?

Try taping the ruler down with painter's tape on the back, it stops the sliding (learned that after ruining a page myself).

Yeah but that tape can leave a real sticky mess on the page after. I just press down hard with my free hand and go slow. The tape trick adds another step and I've had it tear paper when I pull it off. A heavy ruler or one with a rubber back works better for me without the risk of residue.
