Index vs. paper clips for monthly spreads, I made the wrong call

I've been bullet journaling for about 8 months now, mostly for work tasks and meal planning. Last month I decided to use a paper clip system for my monthly tabs instead of drawing little index tabs on the page edge. It worked okay for 2 weeks, but then the clip caught on my backpack and ripped out page 14, which was my whole grocery list for the week. Now I'm back to the index method and it's way more stable, even if it takes 15 extra minutes on setup day. Has anyone else had a favorite page get destroyed by an accessory like that?

Ugh, I lost a whole week of meal plans to a paper clip once too... hate that.
