Serious question, did that $310 framing nailer actually save me money or did I just fall for a good sales pitch?
I do small decks and sheds around Akron and I finally dropped $310 on a name brand framing nailer after fighting with a borrowed one all last summer. Two weeks into using it, I knocked out a 12x16 shed frame in a day and a half, which used to take me close to three days with the old hammer and hand nails. What nobody warns you about is the $70 box of nails that lasts barely two jobs, so now I'm doing math on every single wall I put up. I still say the tool paid for itself, but I want to hear from the guys who swing a hammer on purpose and swear the nailer is for lazy people. Did the speed actually make you money, or did the nail cost eat the difference?
Man I feel you on the nail cost, that $70 box stings every time. For me the speed is what pays, I bid per job not per hour so cutting a shed frame from 3 days to 1.5 is straight profit even after nails. If you're charging by the hour it's a wash, but if you quote flat rates the nailer wins every time.
