Overheard someone at Aldi say they cut their grocery bill by $40 just by shopping the clearance shelf first.

That got me thinking about how I usually just go straight for what's on my list and ignore the clearance rack. I wonder if rearranging my shopping route like that would actually add up to real savings over a few months. Any tips on what deals are actually worth grabbing there?

Sure, I'll play devil's advocate. That whole "cut $40 off their bill" story sounds nice but it's probably a one-time thing where they got lucky. Most clearance shelves are full of random seasonal stuff nobody wanted, like pumpkin spice crackers in January or some weird flavored chips that expired last month. You're not really saving $40 if you end up buying stuff you don't need or will waste because it goes bad fast. Plus, you're now wasting time wandering around hunting for deals when you could be done shopping in 15 minutes. That time cost adds up too, especially if you value your Saturday morning not being spent sorting through dented cans. I'd rather just stick to my list and use coupons or store sales that actually apply to things I buy regularly.

Relax, it's just grocery shopping, not a life or death strategy game. If someone wants to dig through clearance to save a few bucks, let em.
