Shoutout to the $3 bus from Bangkok to the Cambodian border

I used to book a private taxi for that trip, which cost me $60 every single time. A local vendor at Khao San Road told me about the public bus last month, so I gave it a try. The ride was a bit longer and less comfy, but it got me to the exact same place. Anyone have other cheap border crossing tips for Southeast Asia?

Yeah, the public bus thing is a game changer. That "bit longer and less comfy" part is the real trade-off, but for saving like fifty bucks? Totally worth it. My tip is to always check for local minivans or shared taxis once you're on the other side of the border too. They're usually waiting and can be way cheaper than the first price you get quoted to get to your next town.

Remember that time I paid for a fancy bus with AC and reclining seats, only to get stuck behind a broken down truck for two hours? Felt pretty dumb for not just taking the cheap bus and saving a ton of cash. I guess my comfort cost me an extra fifty bucks and didn't even get me there faster. What's the most you've ever overpaid just to be a little more comfortable on a trip?

Sometimes that extra cash just buys you a nicer seat for the wait, like @wendyk56 found out.
