Hot take: all those 'pack lighter' tips made me waste money on laundry fees

I tried following the ultralight crowd for a 10 day trip to Portland last summer, cramming everything into a 30L backpack with just 3 shirts and 2 pairs of pants. By day 5 I was coughing up $12 every other night at a laundromat because I ran out of clean clothes. Am I missing something or is doing laundry on vacation actually more expensive than just checking a bag?

Gotta disagree - you just took it too extreme. Traveling light means having a plan to sink wash stuff in the hotel sink or coordinate with a place that has free machines, not dropping $12 at a random laundromat.

Hotels don't let you sink wash socks and underwear in real life.
