Hostels with a shared kitchen always beat the $9 breakfast add-on for me
Stayed 5 nights in Lisbon last spring and cooked my own eggs and rice for about $11 total instead of paying $9 each morning at the hostel cafe, and I still had money left for the tram.
The "$9 breakfast add-on" is not the rip off you think it is. By the time you buy eggs, rice, oil, salt, and whatever else, plus spend your vacation standing at a stove and doing dishes, you saved maybe twenty bucks over five days. That is four dollars a day for cooking, cleaning, and shopping in a city you flew thousands of miles to see. My time on a trip is worth way more than that, and a hot breakfast someone else makes means I am out the door seeing stuff instead of scrubbing a pan. Shared kitchens also mean waiting for a burner, guessing whose butter is whose, and hoping the fridge does not eat your food. You got lucky with your eleven dollar total, but most people buy too much at the store and toss half of it when they leave. Nine bucks for eggs, coffee, and no cleanup is honestly a fair trade.
