DAE think skipping the free hotel breakfast is a smart money move?
Everyone says to take advantage of it, but I find the food pretty boring and it keeps me from going out. I'll grab fruit or a cheap bite from a nearby bakery instead... it feels more authentic and often costs less. This way I start my day actually seeing the town, not just a buffet line. Did this in Lisbon and spent way less on amazing pastries than I would have on extra snacks later.

That buffet line mentality keeps you in the tourist lane, same as your daily routine back home.

Skipping it lets you find those little local spots you'd never see otherwise.

Sure, skipping the buffet sounds great in theory. But in my experience, you often just end up at a different crowded spot that looks local but isn't. @charles442 is right about finding hidden gems, but it takes real effort to avoid the fake ones. I've seen so many 'local' cafes that are just for show, packed with people taking photos. It's like you need a local friend to actually get off the beaten path. Otherwise, you're just following a different kind of herd.
