Warning: My 'budget' grocery store failed me on meat quality last week

I hit up Aldi on 42nd street for some ground beef because the price was right at $3.50 a pound. But the fat ratio was so off it basically shrunk to nothing in the pan. On the other hand, I got a chuck roast at the same place last month for $6 and it was fantastic. Is it worth paying more at a butcher for consistency, or do you just gamble on the cheap stuff and deal with the losses?

Aldi meat is fine if you know what to grab." That's like saying a used car is fine if you know which ones won't explode on the highway. In my experience, Aldi's ground beef is a total crapshoot. I've had packs that cook up fine and others that leave a greasy puddle and a pile of sad meat dust in the pan. That chuck roast you got lucky with was probably a fluke from a good supplier, not a sign of consistency. I'd rather pay $4.50 at a local butcher and know I'm not gambling my dinner on a Tuesday night. Save the cheap stuff for chili or tacos where you can hide the shrinkage with beans and seasoning. Otherwise, you're just paying for the privilege of watching your meal disappear.
