TIL a trick for cheaper soup from a guy at the food pantry

I was picking up a box at the community center last Tuesday and a volunteer showed me how to make a big pot of bean soup with just a ham bone and some old veggies. I made it for about $3 total and it fed us for two days. What's your favorite way to use up a leftover bone?

My grandma always saved her turkey carcass for soup after Thanksgiving. You just simmer it with an onion and some pepper for a few hours, then pick off the meat and add whatever pasta you have. It makes the whole house smell amazing.

Oh that's the best part of the whole meal! I do the same thing with our leftover ham bone. It makes the soup taste so rich and smoky. Nothing beats a homemade broth.

Chicken bones make a killer broth for rice.
