My roommate said 'a cheap meal isn't a good deal if you don't want to eat it' after I made a giant pot of bland lentils for the third time this month.

I mean, it's true, but now I'm stuck between saving cash and actually enjoying my food, so what's your take on balancing cost and taste?

Well, you've discovered the sad truth that lentils are basically edible brown water without some help. My advice? Raid the spice aisle at an international market, where you can get big bags of cumin, smoked paprika, and chili powder for a couple bucks. It turns your punishment porridge into something you might actually crave.

Punishment porridge" is killing me, that's exactly what my last batch tasted like. @caleb_price you're so right about the spice aisle being a lifesaver. My first try was so bad I almost gave up on lentils for good. A ton of cumin and some garlic powder finally made it taste like actual food.

People get way too dramatic about food. It's just lentils, not a life sentence. A little salt and pepper goes a long way before you start buying fancy spices. Saving money on groceries is smart, and you can always add a cheap sausage or some broth to make it better. Your roommate has a point, but you don't need to turn every meal into a big event.
