A caviar moment at our $5 dinner club left me questioning the rules

Our group's whole point is sharing meals that cost little to make, but someone brought a potato salad topped with expensive caviar. I feel like breaking the budget theme just to show off can make the event less fun for people trying to save. Has anyone else had a fancy dish throw off a planned cheap meal night?

Maybe the caviar was just a topping and didn't cost much per person. A tiny bit on a big batch of potato salad could still fit the five dollar limit. The group might need to talk about what counts as breaking the budget.

Used to believe if the math worked out it was fine, but seeing a fancy ingredient like that in a budget group just feels wrong. It shifts the whole vibe from clever and thrifty to showing off what you can buy. Changed my mind after a similar thing happened where someone's "cheap" dish relied on leftover truffle from their fancy job. The point is sharing the same challenge, not finding loopholes.

That 'cost per person' idea is why clubs ban fancy toppings.
