The weirdest mortar additive I ever tried actually saved a job

A guy on another crew swore by adding a bit of dish soap to the mix for hot weather work, said it kept it workable longer. I thought he was nuts, but we were laying brick in 95-degree sun on a south-facing wall in Phoenix and the mortar was setting up way too fast. We tried a capful per batch, and honestly, it bought us an extra 20 minutes of good time. The bond was fine, no issues after a year. Has anyone else used a weird trick that actually panned out?

Been there, that Arizona sun is BRUTAL on mortar. Glad that trick worked out for you.

So a capful per batch was the right amount?

Honestly, that dish soap trick sounds way smarter than my old method of just mixing smaller batches and running myself ragged. I once tried to cool the mix down with ice water like I was making some kind of masonry smoothie, which was a total mess.
